In its Editor’s Choice review, PC World calls the Garmin nuvi 3700 series “without doubt the sexiest, sleekest and best-looking GPS unit we’ve ever seen.” We agree. But the 3700 series is more than just good looks. Garmin has taken the top-of-the-line of its popular and acclaimed nuvi series to yet another level with rich functionality and iPhone-era touch screen capability without sacrificing Garmin’s trademark top of class easy-to-use interface. Along with newly-minted features and the addition of Mexico to the pre-loaded maps of North America (U.S. and Canada), the new king of this class arrives in the thinnest, most portable package yet. PC Magazine also gives the 3790T its Editor’s Choice award, calling it a “solid navigator that raises the bar for the standalone GPS category...”
This isn’t the first time that Garmin has pleasantly surprised us with a notable leap forward after it had already set the standard in its class, but with the nuvi 3700 series, Garmin once again asserts its innovative spirit and redefines the high end.
The nuvi 3750, 3760T, 3760LMT, 3790T and top-of-the-line 3790LMT each weigh in at a mere 4 ounces (113.4 g) and measure 4.8”;W x 2.9”;H x .35” D (12.2 x 7.5 x .89 cm). Yes, that’s .89 cm thick – GPS calls it the thinnest GPS in the world, and, like the iPhone, its sexy good looks make you want to reach out and touch it. And while earlier nuvi units have capable touchscreens, the 3700 series adds iPhone-style multi-touch on an ultra-bright, high-resolution (800 x 480) touch screen that is easier to read than earlier models, although the high-gloss finish can cause some unwanted sunlight reflection.
We’ve wandered the streets of Europe with our old nuvi 370, which compared to the 3700 series looks ancient and thick. The nuvi 3700 series units are truly pocketable like a smartphone making it ideal for use as a pedestrian. The 3700 series includes a pedestrian mode and the unit automatically switches between portrait and landscape modes thanks to a built-in sensor. You can download optional cityXplorer™ content to help you navigate cities as a pedestrian, including mass transit schedules, stop locations, etc. cityXplorer maps are available for select cities throughout North America and Europe with prices as low as $9.99.
One of the compromises of making GPS units more and more svelt is sound volume and quality, typically better on larger units with bigger speakers. The included car window mount features an external speaker that boosts nuvi’s regular audio volume, a clever innovation.
Garmin’s exceptionally easy intuitive interface still greets you with two simple questions: “Where To?” and “View Map.” The unit provides voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that speak street names to your destination.
All of the units in the 3700 series come preloaded with detailed City Navigator® NT street maps for the U.S, Canada and Mexico with nearly 6 million points of interest (POIs) such as stores, restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues, gas stations, ATMs and more, and speed limits for most major roads. The units bearing the letter “M” in the model number (3760LMT and 3790LMT) include lifetime map updates from Garmin (for the life of the unit).
When plugged into its mount, you can receive live traffic updates. The units bearing the letter “T” in the model number (3760T, 3760LMT and 3790T, 3790LMT) include a lifetime real-time traffic subscription. You can receive alerts about traffic delays and road construction that lie ahead on your route and detour around them.
The 3700 series is full of clever features, such as Park Position Recall, which automatically saves your parking spot location when you remove the unit from its mount, allowing you to find your way back to your car if necessary. ecoRoute calculates a more fuel-efficient route, tracks fuel usage and more.
Lane Assist with Junction View guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. It realistically displays road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.
The nuvi 3700 series also rolls out two new routing features: trafficTrends and myTrends. trafficTrends calculates the optimal routes based on historical traffic data. myTrends remembers your most frequently entered destinations and will automatically predict your arrival time and the most efficient route without the need to enter a destination.
With the “Where Am I?” emergency feature, simply tap the screen to get your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations.
Garmin originally brought voice recognition to the nuvi with its 800 series and did so masterfully. The 3790T and 3790LMT include voice recognition, so simply speak to the unit and it will navigate, one less reason to take your hands off the wheel and eyes off the road. You can even customize the voice commands.
The 3790T and 3790LMT also include 3-D Building and Terrain View, where you’ll see representations of prominent buildings in many cities and map contours at low zoom levels, giving you a realistic perspective of the terrain.
All models except the 3750 have Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free calling with your mobile phone using the unit’s built-in microphone and speaker. This also lets you use the unit to call points of interest found on your nuvi GPS, such as a restaurant or hotel.
As found on past nuvis, the 3700 series includes a range of useful travel tools, such as a JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter and calculator. With photo navigation, you can download pictures from Garmin Connect™ Photos and navigate to them.
If you’re looking for a full-featured and versatile vehicle GPS – oh, and a rather good looking one at that – the nuvi 3700 series sets the new standard in its class. [© 2010 Rated4Stars.com]
