To LOOKING FOR THE ONE THAT REALLY WORK
You have left out two great brands of gps handheld units and those are Lowrance and Delorme. You will a great many differing opinions about which is the best. In the end it is the one that you think is the best for what you want it to do and is in your price range. I suggest you got the the forums at www.geocaching.com and ask there and you will get the pluses and minus from people who use them all the time. You will get a lot of information there. To me this article is very misleading and you would be better served elsewhere.

I also own two Magellan's a explorist 400 and a triton 400 I have found that the Triton takes a little more user input and time but will also give very acurate readings and detailed info it will also accept topo maps and give you anything a geocacher would need. I also use the explorist 400 and love the ease of input this is a very fine unit . I also think you should mention that Magellan is constantly working on software updates that are free to the owners and increase the capabilitys the garmin also have updates but they cost you to use them . Thanks Alan

I am looking to buy a nuvi GPS but i want one that is good both for road navigation and be of use on bodies of water.
I am a kayaker and want a unit that I can depend on, to get me back to my put-in spot.
Which unit will best meet my needs?

William,

Check out the nuvi 500/550 crossover. It's got the great driving features of the nuvi series in a rugged, waterproof case, 8 hour battery life, and best of all, lets you load topo maps and even has geocaching features for backcountry travel. The form factor for hiking isn't quite as convenient as a standard handheld, but for the purposes you describe, it just might be ideal. See our review on this site at: http://rated4stars.com/garmin-nuvi-500-550-crossover-gps-review/ Thanks. ...David

Well, I am disapointed not to see any mention of Trimble gps units. I use a use a Trimble GeoXT 2005 series (sub foot) and it works great! And I think we all know it would receive a 5 star rating!

Thanks to all you loyal Megellan users that shared your comments about how satisfied you are with your units. I just recently bought a Megellan eXplorist 500 on eBay just to make sure I didn't get lost in the woods. After making the purchase I then started surfing the internet to find out what geocaching was since the seller had mentioned it in his ad. Turns out I'm sure I'm gonna more than likely become a very avid geocacher so I came to this site to see what other peoples feelings about Megellans were,. So thanks to the Megellan loyalists who voiced thier opinions I can now rest easy that I made a good geocaching purchase even though I didn't realize it at the time. Thanks again for your reassurances. Now I've just got to wait for the postman to bring me my Megellan and I'm off on my first geocaching adventure. Have a great day everyone!!!

I find these reviews to be right on. I loved my Magellan for years until I started geocaching. I then grew to hate it and gave it away. The Garmin Colorado simply cannot be beat for geocaching, and I use it in my car to get around also. Unless they just can't afford it, I don't know why anyone would buy anything else.
