Garmin’s nuvi series has been all about constant innovation and improving on what just a few months ago seemd to be as top-of-the-line as the series could get. Hence, dozens of nuvi models and many with top 4.5- and 5-star ratings. The 7×5 series, which includes the 755T, 765T, 775T and 785T does it again, with the addition of some compelling "gotta have" features and smaller touches that continue to refine this excellent product without undermining its performance. The nuvi 755T earned PC Magazine’s Editor’s Choice award, and its praise, including, "…features that the 755T offers, including the Lane Assist view, 3D Landmarks, and Garmin Connect Photos, make an excellent navigation experience even better."

Garmin’s popular 2×5 series, building on the success of the 200 series, designed as a budget-friendly GPS, continues to blur the lines between "entry level" and mid-level with the 265T, 265W, 275T and 285WT models which sit at the upper end of this category. (These models are not fundamentally different from the other models in the 2×5 series but include richer feature sets, maps and other included options.) As we pointed out in our review of Garmin’s first models released in the 2×5 series (the 205, 205W, 255 and 255W), the result is a product that is marketed as an entry-level system but in fact has a solid mid-level feature set under the hood. Not surprisingly, the 265, 275 and 285 have won accolades from editorial reviewers and owners alike, the latter especially pleased at the perfomance per price. In its review of the 265T, PC World notes this, indicating, "…a reasonable price for a full-featured GPS–especially when you factor in the lifetime traffic service."

If you’re a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices — really good choices — in the top-rated nuvi line, Garmin’s not about to make your decision any easier. The 2×5 series, including the 205, 205W, 255 and 255W adds so many features to the 200 series that the term "entry level" just might not cut it any more. In fact, the 205/205W and 255/255W incorporate both higher-end features as well as features not even seen in some of their higher-end siblings. The result is a product that is marketed as an entry-level system, but in fact has a solid mid-level feature set, earning the 2×5 series even stronger marks than the popular 200 series.

Garmin continues to redefine the leading edge of vehicle GPS systems, and with the 800 series they’ve succeeded again with a truly hands-off GPS that accepts your voice commands, and does so accurately and intuitively. CNN/Money describes it as "…the most advanced speech recognition system on a personal navigation device to date." According to U.S. News & World Report, "you won’t be disappointed with the Garmin nuvi 880." Not only has Garmin set the bar higher with the 880, but once again, redefines the vehicle GPS as we’ve known it.

Garmin has not stopped to rest following its successes with the immensely popular (and deservedly so) nuvi line. With the introduction of the 700 series, Garmin has redefined its top-shelf category, borrowing the sleek good looks of its entry-level nuvi 200 series, but packing it with its high-end features of the 600 series, and then some. The 760 has earned top honors from a number of reviewers, including Editor’s Choice from PC Magazine, which states, "The 760 sports a trimmer, slicker design and adds a number of cool new features and welcome refinements to the top-rated 600 series."

When you get it right, you get it right, and Garmin really got it right with the nüvi 360, the successor to the popular and highly-rated nüvi 350. It’s not often that we award a 5-star rating, but the nuvi 360 has achieved a sensible yet powerful blend of features and implemented them masterfully. In addition, the nuvi is as portable as GPS units in this league get, and a real looker at that. The 360 inherits all of the 350’s features and adds Bluetooth capability.

Entry-level never looked so good in the vehicle GPS market. TomTom significantly improved upon its already solid-performing and crowd-pleasing ONE (2nd Edition), yet has priced the new TomTom ONE 3rd Edition only slightly higher than its predecessor. The 3rd Edition is well-worth the modest price increase. Like its predecessor, the TomTom ONE 3rd Edition is ultra-portable, easy to use, and sports a bright easy-to-read touch screen. As with the 2nd Edition, the ONE 3rd Edition includes an SD memory card with detailed maps of the United States and Canada. Maps for additional countries are also available for purchase.

We were still breathless after our 5-star review of Garmin’s nuvi 360 when Garmin announced what is much more than just a wide-screen version of the 360. Yes, Garmin has managed to do itself one better with the nuvi 660, with several new features that are smart and elegantly implemented, so much so as to inspire some owners to call it “the iPod of GPS navigation systems.” CNet’s editors say, “the Garmin Nuvi 660 is the ultimate traveler’s tool” and PC Magazine calls it, “the best in the shirt-pocket GPS category.”

We thought we couldn’t like a handheld GPS more than the GPSMap 60cs, this unit’s predecessor, but with the GPSMap 60csx, Garmin shows us how it’s possible to turn great products into legendary ones. With effusive accolades from owners at Amazon, Epinions and elsewhere, it’s clear that Garmin has incorporated precisely the right enhancements into its “refresh” of the 60cs to make the 60csx a truly outstanding, best-in-class handheld unit, so much so that we’ve bestowed it our top rating of 5 stars.
